And me needing a summer job...
I ask you oppo. What would you think if I applied to work for LaneSplitter?
Most you all have read my pieces... you know my writing style and stance on most things.
(if you haven’t read anything, here are my person top three that I think were the best)
1:
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
2:

3:
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
As well, I do teach riding up here...which gives me a little more insight then most.
What would Oppo do?
EDIT: I agree its not such a great idea to come in the week after he was gone. I currently have a job interview set up for something in TO... I’d get that done, re-work a couple of my older article for horrifying spelling, and go from there.
Also, I admire Sean. I genuinely do. That actually part of the reason I kinda want to do this, to not let his work (and Lanesplitter) just languish.

Only if you hire Xyl0 as your editor. Other than that, sure, I think it’s a good idea.

Do it

Peter for president.
![]() 04/20/2016 at 14:25 |

Depends. Are you going to make an endless string of “why buy X car when you could buy X motorcycle...” type posts?
![]() 04/20/2016 at 14:26 |

I think you’d do a great job! Go for it.
![]() 04/20/2016 at 14:26 |

Doesn’t quite look like they’re hiring at the moment:

no.
just an endless string of “why X bike is a bad beginners bike” :D
joking aside, I have some ideas for a few articles. but bike blogs live and breathe on reviews for products...which I’m not sure how I would be able to get in on (unless I actually get hired by LS).

I like your articles - better than most chaff on the FP.
![]() 04/20/2016 at 14:27 |

Go for it, the worst they will say is no... and since I get the impression Sean is gone because of financial reasons I suspect they will not be looking to replace him. But you won't know unless you ask.
![]() 04/20/2016 at 14:27 |

His seat is still warm and you want to put your ass in it already? Bad form.
![]() 04/20/2016 at 14:29 |

I admit, I wanted to write for them before he even got it. Then he took over and well, I kinda scrapped the idea.
now that he is gone, I REALLY dont want LS to drop into nothing. But I do get where you are coming from.
![]() 04/20/2016 at 14:29 |

shhhh don’t say that. fake it till you make it etc.
![]() 04/20/2016 at 14:31 |

Most of your stuff has been pretty solid and actually being a riding instructor does lend some credibility.
You certainly couldn’t make things worse so I say go for it!
![]() 04/20/2016 at 14:32 |

I’d suggest you go for it. But I’d also suggest going back to remove the typos contained within a post asking whether people think you should be a writer....
![]() 04/20/2016 at 14:33 |
|
I agree, seems kinda tactless given we don’t even know the reasons...this is implying it was because they didn’t like him, or he didnt perform well or something
![]() 04/20/2016 at 14:33 |

no one ever accused me of being subtle, that’s for sure.
![]() 04/20/2016 at 14:36 |

You noticed the Tavarish authored LS article too?
![]() 04/20/2016 at 14:37 |
|
I might wait a little. But I wouldn’t be against you writing there.
![]() 04/20/2016 at 14:39 |
|
I think you would do a great job, but I have a feeling that Sean is gone because Lanesplitter wasn’t raking in the cash, not because of something he did, or because it was in need of a good writer. I could be wrong, but since they killed off one of the most read motorcycle blogs on the internet, I’m guessing job prospects won’t be so good.
![]() 04/20/2016 at 14:39 |
|
yea...I have a job interveiw with another company down in TO....I think I’ll get that done, re-write some old articles (for spelling and what not) and go from there

I just had another thought, with the growing interest in motorcycles on Oppo, what about starting a new motorcycle sub-blog kind of like how there’s also Overland & Expedition and The Rally Takeover that share to Oppo now?

I <3 this comment.
![]() 04/20/2016 at 14:44 |

maybe. I’ll look into it once I get this final exam over with.
![]() 04/20/2016 at 14:46 |

i know i shouldn’t get excited (seeing is how its not ever really my blog) but I like hearing that people at least know of O&E at this point.

:P
![]() 04/20/2016 at 14:53 |

YES. DO IT.
Honestly, once I got over my initial fury of Sean being let go my first thought was that maybe they could get you to pick it up. I don’t think it’s in bad taste to ask now.
Also, I’d like to see stuff from oppo shared on lanesplitter, and maybe get some other people like Justin Hughes to write if they can/want. While I really liked Sean, I always felt lanesplitter was a little much of only his voice.
![]() 04/20/2016 at 14:58 |

Go for it. They might be able to afford you part time since you’re Canadian
![]() 04/20/2016 at 15:05 |

Personally, I would love to see all motorcycle related OPPO content get pushed to Lanesplitter, with one person managing it and pushing out some of their own content/bigger stories. That way there would be a large range of content and interests. That would let us, the reader, choose what we wanted to read.

As a long time player of Dungeons and Dragons, I have no problem looting a valued party member’s corpse for their loot before the body is cold. Though not everyone may agree.
I’ve had an idea or two about Lanesplitter myself. I even pitched some ideas to Sean, but he went in a different direction (which is fine - clearly it worked). Maybe we should talk...
![]() 04/20/2016 at 15:08 |

Well Lanesplitter is an official sub-blog of Jalopnik whereas Oppo, The Rally Takeover, O&E, etc. are really separate from the mothership
![]() 04/20/2016 at 15:13 |

Then I suggest a bloody and barbaric coup to take it back.
![]() 04/20/2016 at 15:30 |

I come to Oppo specifically for motorcycle content most of the time. It would be nice to have a collection of it. I’m planning to do some posts on rides I’m doing and such this summer and it would be nice to have a more defined place to put it.

I’m riding down to Tennessee tomorrow for a cabin trip in Gatlinburg and I’m going to check out the dragon while I’m down there and do some other exploring and moto-camping. I’m planning on posting about it and other rides I’m planning too so a dedicated motorcycle blog would be pretty sweet

WE WILL RIDE ETERNAL, SHINY, AND CHORME!!!

Not exactly sure what you mean by this... /S
I day go for it, eventually at least. Don’t stop writing though, if that’s where you want to head. Maybe they can at least share your stuff to LS for now.
![]() 04/20/2016 at 16:26 |

You’re very kind - thanks! I’d definitely be interested in contributing over there.

Couldn’t hurt to apply. Also, I wouldn’t mind hearing from another SV owner. :)

To the contrary, regardless of the temperature of the seat, it is still empty.
Form follows function.

That seemed like less a, “Sean you aren’t doing a good job” and more a, “Hey lets cut out these sub blogs and authors and refocus our product into more click baity click bait.” So, I wouldn’t get your hopes up.

It’s not bad form at all. Chances are, given the swiftness and unexpectedness (on Sean’s end) of his departure, that the GM higher ups have already been fielding interviews for replacement candidates (which it looks like they’ve already replaced him) and/or additional writers. In the media industry, pretty much by the time you see an announcement of an opening or a recent departure, it’s already too late.

Applying for a position when you know there’s a vacancy is not a comment at ALL about the person who previously held that position. That’s especially true in the media industry where turnover is always pretty high, the community is small, and everyone knows everyone (and consequently, everyone shuffles around the same limited number of media outlets constantly).
I work in a smaller market and have worked in both television and print media. It’s kind of the running joke here that everyone in this community of professionals will eventually (or already has) work/worked at competitor X, competitor Y and competitor Z. I have friends who have worked at one affiliate, only to work at another, and then another later on, or who have worked for all the local dailies and some of the weekly/biweeklies. I’ve been recruited by a competitor network affiliate twice, and even by papers that are owned by the same company as the one I work/worked for.

You have nothing to apologize for. And it’s not poor form at all to be interested in this position (or one like it), even if you like, respect and admire the work of the person who vacated it.

D’awww, shucks. Thanks, CB!
Also... I have edited quite a number of Pete’s pieces. I’d be glad to continue in that capacity. :)

Sad because the only two posts since Sean has been gone are reposts of Youtube videos.

Something, something, Gawker Media is a content aggregator...
